Since 1993, Michael May has been known as the King of Sausages, that is until 2003 when this enterprising chef and co-founder of Candelari's Sausage Company expanded his kingdom and took on the challenge of making pizza. May, along with partner Greg Wheeler, Both Bellaire High School graduates, figured if people liked Candelari's Sausage all on its own, they'd also love it crumbled over a deep dish or New York style pizza.
So they set out to make no ordinary pizza pie. They learned to bake an exemplary crust standing at the side of one of Houston's most talented artisan bakers before they set up shop in Bellaire. Then the duo searched for the tastiest cheeses and toppings and hit the kitchen experimenting with inspired combinations that has everyone from the Houston Press' food critic to local schools and churches (eligible for special discounts) raving that it's the best pie in the city.
